We've Got Something To Prove

Match Day: 26
Teams: Remo Stars FC Versus Akwa United FC
Nickname: Sky Blues Stars Versus The Promise Keepers.
Manager: Fatai Osho Versus Abdul Maikaba
Match Venue: Gateway International Stadium, Sagamu.
Date: 28-06-2017
Time: 4pm.

On Wednesday the 28th of June 2017, the Gateway International Stadium in Sagamu will be one of the stadia nationwide to host the League Management Company Nigeria Professional Football League, since it is the home ground of Remo Stars FC, a club formed in 2004.

Remo is playing in the league for the first time in their history and one can excuse them for a poor performance in this competitive league of ours; because it looks certain that they'll be heading back to the league they got promoted from. While Akwa United are enjoying the season of their life as they are for the first time in their history contesting for the league title after winning their first Federation Cup last season. They look to add the league title to their trophy cabinet.

Remo stars sit comfortably at the bottom of the league table with 26 points from 25 games after they won 7, drew 5 and lost 13 of its games. They've struggled in front goals, managing to score just 19 times and conceding 25 goals which goes to show how porous their back line is. But for Akwa, they sit in fourth place with 39 points, won 11, drew 6 and lost 7 games so far. Akwa have been quite prolific in front goals, scoring 29 and conceding 18; the definition of discipline in football.

Remo has lost 6 of its last ten games, won 3 and drew one amassing 10 points out of the possible 30. While Akwa is the most top-form team in the league, won 6, drew 2 and lost 2 in their last ten games amassing 23 points out of the possible 30 although they still have an away game in hand against Rivers United.

For the permutations: a win for Remo may see them move up the table if Gombe United either draws or loses at home and/or Shooting Stars outrightly loses away to Rivers United. While for Akwa on the other hand, a win will see them replace Elkanemi Warriors in second place if they lose or draw to Enyimba away in Calabar and/or MFM FC loses or draws at home to Sunshine Stars with a game less than the other teams among the top four.

It is poised to be a cracker of a game, with Akwa genuinely challenging for the league and Remo determined to remain in the elite league. If there is any game that Akwa should get maximum six points from both legs, this is one of such and if there is any game that can turn the season around for Remo, this is definitely one of them. "Both teams have something to prove on Wednesday.

My prediction: My heart belongs to the "Akwa will win at Remo" group but my head thinks Remo "may carry the day" but all in all, I expect a closely contested fixture and my scoreline will be a narrow win for either side or a share of the spoil.

Akwa United's shot stopper Oloronleke Ojo and Alhassan Ibrahim are in contention for the Golden Glove and Golden Boot respectively with Oloronleke keeping 9 clean sheets and Alhassan scoring 11 goals from his midfield position.

Set the alarm, book the flight, mark the calender, we got a date in Sagamu on Wednesday. Will it be Osho or Maikaba leading the victorious side and taking all three points at stake or will they go home sharing one point a piece and giving me, you and the match officials the remaining one point to take home? Fingers crossed...
